About the Trust

Responding to enquiries

Since the Trust started in 1988 we've had calls, letters and emails from almost all European countries plus several in Asia and the Americas. Barn Owl workers from Spain, Germany, Hungary and India have all visited the Barn Owl Trust. Of course most of our enquiries (98%) come from England, Scotland, and Wales and there's a strong bias towards SW England where we are based.

Please note: whilst much of our advice is still applicable abroad, folk need to be aware that different countries often have different small mammal species. For example, there are no field voles in Ireland and mainland Europe has common voles. Therefore, our leaflet No. 1 Habitat Management (which talks about the need for rough tussocky grassland) is only applicable to mainland Britain.

Local contacts across the UK

We have compiled two directories of people who work independently of the Barn Owl Trust in other parts of the UK and we use these where a local contact is needed. One covers wildlife rehabilitators who take in injured owls, the other is a list of people who run their own Barn Owl conservation projects. Most of these erect Barn Owl nest boxes and some are involved in giving habitat advice, monitoring the population and ringing birds. Although many are entirely independent, some are in close contact with the Barn Owl Trust and/or other organisations.

Research projects and reports

Although all our research work has been carried out in SW England, the results and recommendations are generally applicable to the entire UK (and other countries to some extent). For example, our fifteen-year investigation into Barn Owl road mortality and the effects of the major road network on the UK Barn Owl population produced recommendations for reducing road deaths that could work in any road-network landscape capable of growing trees and shrubs.

Erecting nest boxes, on-site advisory visits, site-survey consultancy work, detailed recording of Barn Owl sightings, occupied sites and casualties, county Barn Owl surveys, receiving owl casualties, rehabilitation and owl releases, educational visits to schools, talks to adult groups, training courses

The full range of our activities is carried out throughout Devon and Cornwall (and to a lesser extent in Dorset and west Somerset). Professional consultancy work, training and lectures involve occasional trips to Wales, the Midlands, the Home Counties and almost anywhere the costs can be covered. We occasionally present university lectures and scientific papers in mainland Europe too.

The Barn Owl Trust is dedicated to conservation & education and does not operate a visitor centre.
