Barn Owl in flight

Anyone who has ever watched a Barn Owl hunting at dusk or dawn has surely been touched by the experience. A wonderful white form gracefully seeking its prey, floating silently over grassland and meadow... mystical, magical, amazing.

We have lived side by side with Barn Owls for centuries, but in modern times wild Barn Owls have become increasingly rare - and the reasons are all man-made.

The Barn Owl is a symbol of our relationship with the countryside, and the decline of this beautiful bird reflects our attitude towards the environment. All things are connected and no species can prosper in isolation - not even human beings. If we live in balance with nature, then Barn Owls, and so much other wildlife would thrive.

Restoring the Balance

We aim to ‘Restore the Balance' between humans and Barn Owls by conserving the Barn Owl and its environment and we have achieved a tremendous amount thanks to a small team of hard-working staff and dedicated volunteers.

We carry out practical conservation and research work, advise farmers and landowners, run a free national information service and liaise with local authorities and statutory bodies, conservation groups and individuals.

We produce educational material and give talks to schools and adult groups.

We also run a small sanctuary for sick and injured owls and have a 24-hour live owl emergency phone line.

You can make a difference

If you become a Friend of the Trust you will be helping to conserve this beautiful bird in the wild. For as little as 38p per week you can help us to continue our valuable work and ensure that Barn Owls will continue to be seen in the countryside.

Our suggested minimum annual donations are:

Individual £20

Family (including children at the same address) £25.

Donations made by standing order will save on our admin costs. You could make a monthly standing order of at least £3. What else can you do for 10p a day?

If you choose to Gift Aid your donation we will be able to reclaim an additional 25p in the ‘£' from the Inland Revenue.

Children can also get involved by becoming ‘Owlets' (junior Friends of the Trust).

New Friends will receive a pack which includes :

  • a full colour A3 poster
  • a Barn Owl Trust pin badge
  • a Barn Owl stationery pack
  • a subscription to our twice-yearly newsletter, 'Feedback'
  • a copy of our annual report

Family friends receive additional information especially for children.

Discounts for Friends

  • 20% discount to all Friends on work produced by Cornish wildlife artist Dick Twinny (see Links).
  • 50% discount on membership of the Environmental Transport Association (see Green Roots - Links).

We do not have a visitor centre as our sanctuary is a place of peace and refuge for the owls, and disturbance is kept to an absolute minimum. It is on private land with no public access. However, we are always looking for volunteers to help with various indoor and outdoor tasks so if you live close by and would like to help, why not give us a ring.

The Barn Owl Trust is dedicated to conservation & education and does not operate a visitor centre.
